Seeing as I had been forsaken by Sadie's Driver, Trail Pair and Opus for the Olympics , I decided to check out one of my favorite areas in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. . What a fabulous gorgeous weekend for soaking up the beauty of the wilderness. And there were no bugs-unbelievable. . The bad dogs and I got a fairly late start from Trinity (11:30) but in spite of hiking in the heat of the day, a moderately strong breeze kept us cool. There was no snow getting up to Buck Creek Pass with the exception of a couple of small traverses just before you get to the pass. I had planned to go up Flower Dome that evening and Helmet Butte the following morning.
After setting up camp, we wandered off to Flower Dome. The trail up to Flower Dome was 50% snow on and off. It would have been superb camping up there since there were plenty of bare spots to set up a tent and also plenty of snow and its melt for water.

My favorite time of the day is when the evening sunlight casts a soft golden glow on everything, including on the tired bad dogs.

The next morning I headed straight up from camp to Helmet Butte. The meadows get steeper and steeper as you head up and I found myself wishing I had the company of Trail Pair and Sadie's Driver 'cos I am a chicken. It didn't help when 20 feet from the summit I ran across the carcass of a deer, ribcage and all.

Great to be back in the real wilderness at last!!

Glad you made it out there! Glacier Peak looks as fantastic as I remember from the pass. I love the glowing dog photos too. All the bad-dog photos I have they're standing on snow!

Whitedog, those sequences of small, big, and old white wolves are beautiful and funny but please stop calling them bad: it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. That's a long trek: very impressed with Emma. tdd

It is prettier up there with the snow patches. Camping on Flower Dome is a great idea.

Interesting to see it up there earlier in the summer. I've only been there later.
I like the dogs glowing in the evening light.

That's so true. There are bad dogs, and then there are poodles...
