SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. -- A woman was fatally shot by a bear hunter on Sauk Mountain, said Chief Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.
A 54-year-old woman from Oso was hiking with a friend Saturday morning when a separate group of hunters were also in the mountain.
One of the hunters, a juvenile male from Concrete, spotted what he thought was a bear and fired off a round, fatally wounding the woman.
The incident happened along Highway 20 west of Rockport. Reichardt said it’s legal to hunt bear in that area and it’s also a popular hiking area.
Police said no one is in custody and they continue to interview the woman who was hiking with the victim. |

It still blows me away that people hunt near trails. That is terrible.

SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. - A 54-year-old Washington woman hiking at Sauk Mountain Saturday was fatally shot by a boy hunting bear, police said.
The woman, an Oso resident, was hiking with a friend when she was shot. Investigators believe she was stopped on a trail, putting something in her backpack, when the boy mistook her for a bear. He fired one shot.
Police say the boy is from Concrete. He was accompanied by at least one adult. |

Oh boy. it begins. The finger pointing, and blame game, the anti this, anti that. Let's try to keep it civil, and not get this thread locked.
My sympathies are with this womans family. But lets not forget (here comes the hate mail) this boy has to live with the guilt of killing this woman for the rest of his life. |

I agree completely. It's terrible for the boy. I just think that maybe the adults he was with might have had better judgement on where to take him to shoot stuff. Just my opinion. It is a very sad story for everyone involved.

Ah, the defending of killers begins, while at the same time calling for "civility". The first rule of hunting is to know what your gun is aimed at. Killing a person is inexcusable. Either the "boy" or the "supervising adult" needs a long prison sentence, depending upon the age of the "boy". What kind of world would we live in if the only penalty for killing someone was living with the guilt afterwards? .

It solves just as much as jailing any criminal: it sends the message that you better be darn sure what you're shooting at or you're going to jail. Letting the parties off scott-free sends the message "blast away, and if you kill someone, so what? It was just an accident".

Putting a kid (or an adult) in prison solves nothing.
How about restricting hunting near popular trails |

Questions I have that I cannot easily find the answers to on the web:
How old to you have to be to kill a bear?
Do you have to check for the sex (cubs nearby) before you shoot?
Do bear hunting regulations say anything about hunting near trails?
When you purchase a license are you required to take a test of any sort?
