Well, B.C. has told the story very thoroughly, but I'll go ahead and add my bits. We thought getting up at 5:00 AM would be enough, but we found out the hard way that we should've been starting off from Eightmile lake at 5:00am.
Here we are at the trailhead for Eightmile Lake about 10:30AM:Eightmile Mt Eightmile Mt (2) Eightmile Mt (1)
This part was easy. Little did we know what was coming...Eightmile Mt (4) Eightmile Mt (3) Eightmile Mt (6) Eightmile Mt (7) Eightmile Mt (8) Eightmile Mt (9) Eightmile Mt (10) Eightmile Mt (11) Eightmile Mt (13)
We had lunch along the stream feeding Eightmile Lake:Eightmile Mt (14) Eightmile Mt (15) Eightmile Mt (16) Eightmile Mt (18) Eightmile Mt (20)
We followed the stream then turned uphill as we came to a nice open area. This was the mountain luring us in. Soon we were in endless thick brush, vine maples and stickers. I remember thinking it's going to open up, then we can move, but it never did. If it wasn't brush, then it was downed trees, debri and rocks to climb over, all while climbing an extremely steep slope. These pictures give an idea of what it was like, but don't tell the whole story since they were taken in relatively open areas.

Eventually the trees and brush gave way to more rocky terrain, but if anything it just got steeper at this point:

Here's some of the views on way up:

Finally we approach the saddle and the ridge leading to the summit:Eightmile Mt (51) Eightmile Mt (53) Eightmile Mt (54) Eightmile Mt (56) Eightmile Mt (61) Eightmile Mt (58)
At last we reached the ridge, should be easy from here... Not!
Eightmile Mt (64) Eightmile Mt (66) Eightmile Mt (67) Eightmile Mt (69) Eightmile Mt (70) Eightmile Mt (72) Eightmile Mt (73) Eightmile Mt (65) Eightmile Mt (68)
Approaching the summit:

On the summit at last:

We spent the night making our way down. Here's a few pics from the next morning:

After Phelps, Sasse, and now 8Mile, it's frightening to think what you have in store for your peeps over the upcoming long weekend.
Thank heavens for Todd's banana bread!

Now I know why MountainMan wasn't at work! He was still recovering from that trip. Hey, on the bright side Mt. Adams is going to look easy compared to these adventures.

hmmm....
I think the biggest key going up 8-mile is to avoid the slide alder as much as possible. We had to hug a rock band as tight as possible to stay out of the stuff.
I would still consider this one a dayhike though. I believe we did it in 9:30 hours and that included about an hour afternoon nap and lunch on the ginormous summit. I think I fished for 20-30 at 8-mile waiting for the others as well.
awesome views on that one though. lot's of fun.

I did Eightmile on snow in spring, and didn't have any troubles with brush or rocky stuff, just steps up the flank of the mountain pretty much direct to the top. Maybe that's a better time of year for Eightmile.

Bloated Chipmunk wrote: | I advertised it as a day hike w/a nice easy trail to Eightmile Lk. & then some bushwhacking & scrambling up the nearby summit of Eightmile Mtn. Main lessons learned here:
1) It is not a day hike, unless you are super fast &/or start super early
2) Bushwhacking adds a lot more time than you think |
Hey, you guy's made it under 24 hours....so it's still a day hike. Bushwhacking is especially time consuming in the dark. That must have been pure joy walking off trail through the woods in the dark.
The neatest thing about this hike is that you'll always remember it. Many hikes tend to run into each other in a person's memory. It's when things go a little different than planned that a hike stands out forever. It'll add fuel to your stories when you get older and spend time yakking about how crazy you were when you were young. I can hardly wait for your groups next adventure !

Hey, turnaround times are great but they are only guidelines in my view. If you feel confident of being able to retrace your steps and you have the gear to spend the night it's a great experience to go for it. Glad you got this opportunity.

Yea, if you tell someone you might be doing this fine.
Had a text message not gotten through (in an area with very questionable cell service at best) this could have been a SAR effort (prehaps unnecessary, but how is one to know), which is not something to take lighty.
After all is said and done as people have pointed out this is one for the memory banks and will no doubt provide a many stories to tell for many years.
