I love(d) the Evening Photography thread, and have learned a ton from it... I also am very intrigued by Black and whites... I feel like they tell a great story?! Maybe that is just me...
However what makes a good black and white? What makes a bad? When is ideal, not ideal, etc...? There is a lot to be learned... That, and I LOVE LOOKING AT PEOPLE'S BLACK AND WHITES!!!

Oh, I just started a different kind of photo thread
Here
What strikes me with black and white is contrast. There needs to be something added in or taken away by removing color, which can often distract.
For instance, this photo had a skier crossing some rocks. It seemed better to me in black and white cause of the contrast of the skier against the snow with rocks seperating him.
When I think of black and white, I don't know why, but I think of texture and shadow, where in colors I think of light and contrast. They are both similar, but texture is important. Think on it? It is the bristles on comb, the tree on ridgetop, the rocks neath a slope.
I also think in curves and form.
Sometimes it's just black and white. Color doesn't add, so take it away.
Sometimes the light damage is too much. It is easier to play with in black and white.
And finally I just love B&W.

Ancient Lakes in Eastern Washington
this is up at ancient lakes. I do more black and white when I'm in the city than I do in the mountains. I just love the colors up there.

Well put Jason, Quote: | Sometimes it just is black and white. Color doesn't add, so take it away. I also think in curves and form. |
Snowy mountains lend themselves to this very well, as you showed in your excellent photos (I love approaching Baker).
Having the ability to convert to black and white from a color original was one of the best reasons to go digital.

ha .. i haven't gone there yet in digital .. i'll have to try some ..
in the ole days .. i shot b & w almost exclusively .. as i liked to work with contrast and shadows .. then i'd develop and print all my own stuff .. dodging and burning .. fun stuff ..
anyway .. texture is an interesting consideration .. hmm .. i can see that now in your images jason .. awesome

I don't take a lot of B&Ws, mainly because of an incident that happened a long, long time ago, when I was just starting out with photography. I was hiking in the Northern Areas of Pakistan, very close to Nanga Parbat. I came upon a small glacial tarn (~10,000ft), which was the most amazing green color. For some stupid reason I had a B&W film loaded. Arrrrgh!
When not to take B&Ws - 1
On the other hand, sometimes B&Ws make sense (see previous posts ). e.g. I always love Ponderosa Pines in B&W; makes me feel the dryness so that I can almost smell their aroma...

Oh, this was about a dozen years ago. I don't remember many details (at least not enough for a trip report) and only have a few photos scanned in (don't even know where the negatives are now). If you are interested, here are the photos on Flickr:

A few more to keep this thread going. I'm excited to look for black and whites this weekend.

Beautiful shots and appropriate use of B&W for the somber occasion. (I hope that the moment was not too emotional for you, so excuse me if my praise is inappropriate.)

GaliWalker,
Thank you for your comment and sincerity.
Emotional? Why yes it was, I found myself seated in the choir section in the church in plain view of my friend Terry and his three young sons (ages 4-7) in the front row.
Terry and his boys had just lost their Wife/Mother because of Heart failure the previous Sunday evening.
I was holding up pretty well until one of Terry's sons asked if Mommy was in the box (coffin). All I could think of was how this (now) family of 4 was going to cope without their Wife/Mother. The boys so dependent upon their Mothers nurturing, support, guidance, and Love, Terry's loss of his true Love and partner in Life was now vacant and that emptiness just overwhelmed me with great sadness.
The first image, is of Terry and his youngest son.
Taking these pictures was very difficult for me, in the sense that I believe this is a very Sacred, private, and sensitive time for most people and to have someone roving around with a camera I find invasive and disrespectful, but when I saw the children, I was so moved by their presence that I wanted to capture that to share with others.
