I have a question that I have been trying to find out but can seem to find the info.
The question is, Are there any bears on Whidbey Island?
I ask because I am trying to get my wife to go camping with me. When she was a little girl her family was camping at Yosemite and a bear came into there camp at night and tore their tent open. No one was hurt and the bear ran away as soon as her dad yelled. But this left a traumatized little girl. She has not been camping since.
So last night she was talking to her hairdresser and the subject came around to hiking and camping. She knows how much I like it. The hairdresser says that there is a nice state campground on Whidbey and she thought there weren't any bears. She came home and said if I could confirm that bears were no where to be found on Whidbey she would go camping with me.
Anybody know?

Im in the mind to say no. There are deer on the islands because they swim the sound. Ive never heard of bears swimming the sound before.

There are bears on Blake Island and I am pretty sure they did not descend from the Ice Age. Bears swim as good or better than deer, I've seen them.

Tell her that in many years (since 1960) spending a lot of time at a cabin just north a ways of the South Whidbey State Park campgrounds I do not remember ever seeing a bear..
I love the smell of deet in the morning.
The smell, you know that deet smell, the whole mountain.
Smelled like... victory.

I was told 10 years ago that there are bears near that camp ground at the fort. If I remember correctly people at the camp ground saw one a few days before I was there.
Ill bet the park rangers there would know for sure

The other location was Blake Island but according to MC that option won't fly with her.
Thanks for the responses.

Sucia Island. No bears. Go off season or during the weak to avoid the unbearable. Sucia Island Ferry 360 376 3711
