This is a pictorial TR from our ascent of Johannesberg over the weekend. Our original goal was the 1957 NE Rib, but wet brush and saturated soil persuaded us to climb the CJ Couloir instead. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed the climb!

Damn Tom, some of that ice looks like it just landed. That mountain always sounds like part of it's crashing down. hockeygrin.gif

Absolutely awesome! Every time I look at that mountain I feel humbled - way to go and tame it! PS. I was admiring it on Saturday from Cascade Pass, just a day before your climb.

Nice job Tom. Jim and I were yelling to you on our approach to Forbidden. We were thinking of you up there. Glad that you had success. Awesome pics!

Stefan, No my Dad was not with me. I was remarking the whole trip about how you and Don went in there and climbed Johannesberg and Cascade in the same day. That's impressive work. Couple questions: 1) What time of year was that? 2) I assume you descended CJ Couloir. Was it continuous? 2) What route did you take up Cascade? ..we saw a greyish gulley on the S side that looked like it would go, but there looked to be one steep section about 1/6 of the way up. The CJ couloir was not continuous for us, forcing a rap off the moat to climber's right onto unprotectable (waterfalls here), wet low-mid 5th for 1 full pitch. The mountain was silent the whole day. josh_lewis - the E Ridge is exposed and loose, and if I had to give it a grade I'd say it's 5.6 at the most, but mainly class 3-4. Although not super technical, it is a serious mountain.

too bad about pops. we climbed jberg in June 2000. Usually, the road does not open until July 4th, so we parked at the gate down low, and then took bikes up the road. Snow was continuous to the col. I don't remember about Cascade how we went up. Next day we did the Tripletts and then had too much rain so we said forget Mixup and lets go down the couloir, which we did. We glissaded it. Not so bad when you are constantly in the fog--you don't know how steep it is.

Art is an adventure.

Way to go Thomas. Great pics and report. Oh, and incidentally, I don't think it's funny at all talking about "Ribs". Ya wise guy. moon.gif doh.gif
