Spent a beautiful fall day lost in my own thoughts as I traversed the ridgeline between Hannegan Pass and Mamie Pass. Mile after mile of easy walking in heather meadows and fields of ripe huckleberrys.

Hannegan Peak is an absolutely worthy hike in its own right with phenomenal views of Ruth and Shuksan. Easy hiking and a bit of scrambling lead to Granite Mountain and beyond to Peak 7020', the southern terminus of the obscure Skagit Range.
View from Hannegan Peak Trail. Mount Ruth on left, Mount Shuksan on Right.

I continued over Mamie Peak (the large lump of granite above the parking lot). The east ridge was generally delightful scrambling on solid granite though there were a couple notches that required care on loose, dirty terrain. Bring a short piece of rope and some slings or nuts if not absolutely confident on 4th class terrain. Scrambled down the west side to Mamie Pass before a hedious thrash through steep heather, slide alder, devils club, debris covered slabs and vertigious slopes of packed pine needles led back to the parking lot.

Beyond Granite Mtn there is no sign of human visitation. A beautiful, remote and satisfying way to spend a day in the mountains.
wow Mamie Pass, never heard of it but there it is. Falls into my peter principle of pretty places. That is people will stop at the easiest (Artists)and the hardest (Challenger-Whatcom) and ignore the medium places like Watson, and Mamie Pass.
