TR Wing Lake attempt of Black and Corteo Pk.
Oct 11-12, 2008.
Short version;
Temps in the teens, predicted sunshine. Two women, two dogs and me.
Three choices of trips for dogs. Carnie/Maude, Granite potholes (Granit/Trico), or Wing Lake (Black/Corteo pks). Decided Wing had a good chance of good larch colors…
9am TH, 6+ hr snow hike scramble, beautiful scenery, early to be, weather change (no peaks), a nice hike out with improving weather and great views. Happy tired dogs and Pumpkin ice cream for the two legged sort.
My rather long winded narrative:
Temps dropped Friday so I added a bit more warm/thicker clothes into the backpack. It was

It was nice meeting you folks at Wing Lake. Thanks for setting the track, especially across the boulder field. I look forward to more of your trip reports.

Welcome to the list! Great pics of a lovely place.
Question for you: Spruce between Lewis and Wing Lakes? Engelman is the only spruce I've seen within miles of there (Blue Lake TH). I don't recall seeing Engelmans in Wing cirque or anywhere that high in the area. Plenty o' Lyall's larch, subalpine fir and white bark pine up there, of course. I'll look for the Engelman's next time I'm in the area.
Looking forward to your next post.

Welcome to NW Hikers. Gus thanks you for the "honorable mention" - and yes, he is a very shy and withdrawn dog! Nice pics. Looking forward to more reports. We wondered if you guys ventured to Black - Good choice! sadie's driver

Great report, I'd wondered if you guys went for Black given the clouds. And thanks again for setting the trail through the rocks, you guys did an awesome job picking through there!

Funny, we were going to go to Wing but switched to Ice Lakes instead mainly because Maude seemed easier to summit in the snow than Black.

+1. I can report from personal experience that the cheesegrater slope between Wing Lake and Black S col is nasty travel with a thin cover of new snow on it and sooooooo much easier earlier season.

Gorgeous, I agree with the more snow aspect making the talus easier. it is not that easy with no snow either. Great colors emerging from snowpack. I like how tents blend in with fall colors.

I was on Black beginning of September. From Wing it is less than 1:45 up 45m down (I stop for pictures a lot). One of the gals I was with then didn't summit so this trip was for her. The other heard it was beautiful. I figured the snow would preclude bagging a peak, but this time of year I go for the changes of scenery and the colors. She did Maude in August and we did Fernow and 7FJ in August too, so she nixed that one too.
Hey, Sadie's driver... we know mutual people... from Sky... Interesting how small a world it is. Thanks for picking up the crampon. And Rainie was looking around in the morning for Gus. She was warmed up and ready to play.
Trees... I'm not the best at IDing them... Something I'm learing. You'd think after growing up in the mountains for nearly 50 years I'd get it more.
This weekend is one dayer so either Mastiff/Howard or most likely Pugh or something up Glacier Basin. Trying to get in my 30th summit this year:-) Hmmm, maybe Carne/Maude... -that would give me 12 or 13 from the Bulgers list this season. You'll have to wait for the TR. Depends on how late I wake.
Happy trails!
