Now Z&A want to know why Jasper has a human sleeping bag and a fancy coat. I lied and told them he climbs professionally and has sponsorship deals, just like those juiced whippets in their color coordinated gear!

That's a special area in any season, but you guys really nailed it with larch and snow. tongue.gif Wish I had made it in there this year.

Some other observations about whippets: They shiver a lot. They madly chase falling boulders down the mountainside. Jasper is rock of stability by comparison. Edit: Wasn't trying to say there's anything wrong with the whippets. They're very entertaining to hike with, and behaved quite well (except for the rock-chasing thing). It was interesting observing some dogs that have been so thoroughly developed for running.

The whippets weigh 28lbs, consisting solely of muscle and bone. Not any fat on them so hardly surprising they aren't fond of cold temps in October at 9000' elevation. Hardy dogs though - can do miles and miles on the trails, no stops, always moving. Fabulous dogs - wish I had one.

Re: Dog comparisons Those whippets might shiver a bit in the cold, but man they are fast. eek.gif Jasper is no slouch when it comes to chasing after snowballs, but it was interesting watching him have a headstart on Rowena just to have her breeze by him like he was standing still licking himself. He does weigh more than the two of them combined. That helps keep him warmer. agree.gif

Jasper does look a tad rotund compared to the whippets (even though they're total beefcakes):

Do you think he's ready to meet 12 lb Bobs? lol.gif

Gorgeous area with the larch and fresh snow. It sure looks cold, though!

Beautiful! Hey, did you guys encounter "Mad Monty" up there? I ran into him on the Entiat trail in the Aspen grove I was photographing and chatted with him awhile. Said he'd gotten up to Ice Lakes in the evening and hung out most of the morning before heading down.

Who is Mad Monty? While I was hiking alone past Middle Ice Pond in the evening, some guys on the opposite side had built a big campfire (right underneath a large larch, damn them). They yelled across and asked if I was Monty.

Don't tell my dad! He's been thinking about getting another dog. If she did that to you, just imagine what she'd do to me. paranoid.gif
