Mt. Defiance 10.5 miles roundtrip YDS Class 1 1 hour 45 minutes up 1 hour on the summit 1 hour 30 minutes down I won't bore you with the details of this trip but just to say that this trip was a makeup for not making to Kaleetan. My hiking partner bailed due to family obligations so I decided to go as fast as I could up Defiance. What motivated me to go quicker was the fact that if I want to go up Mont Rainier next year I have to be in better shape. Obviously though I have made great strides this year I still have a little bit more to go. I decided to take the Old Mason Lake Trail up and the Ira Springs Trail down. Though it was very windy on the way up and on the summit the views were amazing! Since many of you have been up Defiance and there are a large number of trip reports on Mount Defiance I will just link you to my summitpost report. http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/457764/down-goes-defiance.html Here are some pictures of my trip.

Finally bagged this close in one I see. I half thought about it (or Granite) but decided I didn't really want to climb up anything in particular this weekend. I ended up at Melakwa Lake. Thought about at least going to Melakwa pass but got a late start and had had enough by the time I got to the upper lake at about 12:30. Kaleeten was sure there but not to make it back before dark at the speed I was going if I could have even found my way up without previous study.... The days get shorter, the need for speed is up, but the feel for wanting to go fast is down. I've pretty much turned into a slog hiker of late I guess just out enjoying the nice fall colors/days.

Only 3300 feet of elevation gain... why did it take you so long to reach the summit?

I have to admit I was super determined. I kept an imagine of the way I was a year and a half ago in the back of my head and just became determined. I took the old Mason Lake trail up along with an unplanned trip to Little Mason Lake and bushwacked a couple hundred yards to the main Defiance trail. On the way down I want to take the Ira Spring Trail because you can actually jog on it comfortably. If I took the Ira Spring Trail up though it probably would have ended up 1:50-2:00 due to it being longer. Defiance though is beautiful and so easy to get to! Rather it take you an hour or 4 hours this peak is a clear winner. up.gif

WTF is YDS?
Yosemite Decimal System. I thought it had nothing to do with anything below class 5, but found it to include even simple hiking. A high percentage head for Little Mason unintentionally.
