We were joined today by Bad Dog and Joe. Having our destination narrowed down to two hikes, we met at Cole's Corner for the final decision. Basalt Ridge would give us a nice ridge walk, and the possibility of seeing a few larch, if any still had their needles.
Trail #1515 climbs steeply, quickly getting you to nice views on the ridge. Although we encountered snow, it was not at all icy, and added to the beauty of the area. We also had very little wind today, and found a few intact larch, though most were past prime.
Due to slower travel because of the snow and shutter delay, it took us longer to reach the junction with trail 1408 than it did last year when we continued to Garland Peak. We were hoping to turn north and tag Rampart, but did not have enough time. We also could not follow the trail in the snow north of the junction, adding to the time dilemma.
All in all, a very nice fall hike!
