Huge bear shot on Kitsap Peninsula.
570 pounds seems to be an extradinary weight for a Washington black bear. I'm curious to know if anyone has seen or heard of a bear this large in our area. I doubt if any of the hundreds of bears I've encountered were more than four hundred pounds, the majority much less than that. I wonder if foraging around a relatively populated area made for easy pickings on human-generated food, like orchards, garbage dumps, etc.

Based on the head I can say that I personally have never seen one that big before and I have been crossing their paths in this area for 45 years or so.

That is definitely the biggest black bear I've ever seen....I wonder how many other folks have seen this bear and were secretly hoping for a shot during the season ?

Don't need to have a debate here. Reading the comments on the paper's website, it appears they're having their own debate there.

Then why post this in trail talk? What relevance does it have to hiking?

Seabeck? I suspect that bear knew a thing or two about swimming.

Probably gobbled up all the local geocaches...

That is one big bear. Last year my neighbor shot a 450 lber bow hunting just down the road from where I live. I have a series of geocaches in there and had people complaining about seeing bear scat. Hello!.....you are out in the country where there are wild animals.
Did anyone see Bear Feeding Frenzy on the Discovery chnl last Sunday night? The host flew in a plexiglass box to observe and film brown bears in Alaska. What crazy stuff! They also did a segment on 2 car breaking in black bears. Watch that show and it may change your mind about going out in bear country.

That's a big bar. But he has played a bit with the perspective of the picture to make it look even bigger.

That had to be hell to pack out. Bet he stunk to high heaven.
I've seen a bear that big once in Yosemite, he was well fed with gummy bears, MRE's, and poptarts

I was curious what the record is. 310 # more!
