Due to a busy work and school schedule, I haven't been able to get out much. I was thankful today to be able to take an afternoon stroll to the summit of Mt. Spokane with my wife. Not much snow yet. Hopefully it will come soon. The summit road is somewhat skiable, however. Too bad Darlene's boots haven't come in yet. Next time, though.
Nothing really noteworthy about the trip except I got to see for the first time the imprint of a raptor's wings in the snow where it was snatching up a rabbit. Either it was a big rabbit, or a small bird, as it had trouble getting lift-off, which was shown by a series of rabbit prints and wing marks in the snow, each about 5-10' apart. Finally the rabbit either got away, or the bird had lunch. Some tire tracks in the snow spoiled the conclusive evidence.
The views north from the summit were quite nice. We could see the Kettle Range, Calispell Peak, the Idaho Selkirks, and the Cabinet Mountains of northwestern Montana and northern Idaho. The view down the Pend Oreille River Valley, shrouded in fog, was nice too. I believe I could see some snowy peaks up in Canada.
Just before getting back to the parking area, a young bull moose (small antlers) crossed the road in front of us. We must have surprised him because once we came into view, he darted into the forest out of sight of my camera. Rats! At least I got these photos:
