Today my wife and two kids went on a hike we haven't done before, we went to Dorothy and Bear lakes in the Alpine Lks. area. We started hiking around 10:00 and it was raining lightly. The trail goes through old growth forest the entire way. There were some really nice stands of Alaskan cedar on the south side of the lake up towards the other lakes. We made it to Dorothy lake pretty quickly but couldn't see much because of the low clouds.

I decided that we should continue on towards Bear lake since the rain didn't seem to be bothering us too much yet. We started seeing patchy snow along side the lake. It is a long lake, about a mile and a half. We rounded the lake and crossed some steams and started gaining more elevation to get over the next ridge to get to Bear lake. At the top of the ridge 3800', there was about 6" of snow. We got to Bear lake and it was even cloudier than the other. Deer lake was only a half mile a way from Bear but we turned around cause we were all starting to feel wet and had little over 2 hours of daylight left. We hurried back to the truck to get dry. The kids had a great time throwing snowballs and playing in the water.
Trip stats-11.5 miles in 6 hours and 2000 total elevation gain
