Last but certainly not least on our trip, we hit Chiricahua Natl. Monument which is located in the far SE corner of AZ, about 120 mi. from Tucson. It's a good place to hike if you like interesting rock formations. The rocks were eroded by layers of ash from a volcano that erupted 27 million yrs. ago, creating columnar shapes & huge boulders delicately balanced upon other rocks. We had lots of fun exploring this area.
For the 1st part of the hike, we all took the same trail (Echo Canyon), then stopped for lunch & separated from there so Todd, MM, & I could do a longer loop incorporating the Heart of Rocks trail. It was an ambitious plan given our arrival time at the TH & the short hrs. of daylight, but because of this we were witness to a wonderful sunset.
I forgot my hat on this day, so I borrowed MM's while he borrowed my sister's sombrero.

isn't anyone going to chime in about the recklessness of their route selection???
looks like a good time I am awaiting pics of the grand canyon! also i always wanted to go to Superstition Mountain on the eastern edge of the Phoenix Valley towards Tucson. Nov.-February is a nice time to be in the desert.
I'm sorry I saw this TR and all the terrific pics. I'm sorry because I bypassed this national monument after climbing Chiracahua peak and didn't realize what i was missing. Next time I"m in that area, I'll get inspiration by looking at this TR / pics.
