Beautiful views from Amabilis on Friday. A few inches of fairly new snow (perhaps Tuesday and Wednesday) at the bottom... increasing to 9-12 inches at the top. The road was not groomed on Friday, but was probably groomed by the time the week-enders got to it on Saturday. Maxi-glide helped with the sticky snow conditions in the sun exposed areas. At the two mile 'Y' in the road, I took the less traveled route... crossed the avalanche chute and eventually had to set the tracks on the last 1.5 miles to the Amabilis summit (4554')... where I met two people who had set the tracks while coming up the more popular route. 9 miles roundtrip, gaining 2154 feet of elevation. Photos from my XC ski trip to Amabilis Mtn ..

Where do you get your Maxi-Glide these days? Round containers or those little ketchup packet-like things? Our local REI was out last winter. Had to order from some exotic nordic skiing locale like Vermont or Oregon (?).

We got the last jar at the Issaquah REI about a month ago, they had some other stuff then also.

It's kind of ironic that the discussion on maxi-glide has been mentioned. I went online to REI this morning to replenish my maxi-glide supply... and as mentioned in above responses, REI no longer carries the product... they did have 6 or 7 other types of wax, but none of them looked like they would work for waxless skis like mine. I'm going to REI tomorrow morning on another errand and will see what I can find out on this subject. If I hadn't had maxi-glide on Friday, I would have only made it half-way up Amabilis Mtn.

If you are a cheapskate, a plain old candle will do the trick. Rubbing the candle on your ski bases will prevent snow sticking on so called "waxless" skis. A candle is made out of paraffin wax, which is the same thing as polar ski wax.

REI's southcenter store has recently removed all ski wax from the shelves... so I guess the ski season is over! REI.com indicates that they no longer sell maxi-glide... however, I will purchase it from maxiglide.com.

A few of us almost went to Amabilis Mountain this weekend, as well. I agree with an earlier statement: A lot of us probably should have taken time of work... lol
