Magellan, Aussie, Gimpilator and I decided to try for Union Peak. We made great time getting up to the road and to the Union Gap. Unfortunately once above the gap we realized the snow conditions were not ideal (definite possibility of avalanches if it warmed up) Megellan made the proper and smart call in turning around. Still it was pretty and once snow conditions become better I'd like to do this one again.
Here are some of the pics......

Booted the whole road, only to find the Union route devoid of a track. The ridge was much steeper than I expected and the snow was spring time atrocious. Sloppy wet, and nearly impossible to get up some of the steps. Gimpilator was leading and was all for the summit. It didn't feel right, so I suggested we back off. Everyone was ok with that.
The morning sun was delightful, as was the afternoon snow, which floated without a trace of a breeze. Thanks for the company my friends.
Edit: Technically we did not go to Union Gap, but headed up the fairly standard SW ridge.

We were in the same general area Sunday and the snow conditions were pretty bad.
If you're able to make it back sometime it is definitely worth it to continue from Union to Jove.

Both Union and Jove is definitely the goal for next time! That area is very pretty!

I've been feeling bad that I forgot to give our driver gas money. I'm going to make sure she gets extra next time.

What a difference the week and a half, after we were up there, made in the snow conditions. Nice effort. That sloppy, mushy stuff is the pits. Definitely worth a return visit, esp. if you can grab a clear, sunny day. The views are as good as you anticipate.

Too bad you did not make either summit. I agree the snow conditions were bad, but is it possible you may have slightly steered off-course from the preferred route to the Union Peak summit? I have yet to summit either (I have not even tried), but I have been told it is a popular winter destination and not difficult to ascend... albeit that's with *good* snow.

Hey Gimpi - no gas money necessary. I was happy to drive and it seems a fair trade for having someone else take care of the planning It was good to get out with you.
