Sunday April 5, 2009
After a long day up in the North Cascades on Saturday, the Schmidt family and I decided to pick something a bit closer on Sunday. The weather was just too nice to stay indoors. Slept in a bit, then off to Hwy 2 and the Beckler River road. Nicely plowed all the way up to Jack Pass. Enough room to park there for 2 or 3 rigs (was a tight squeeze on the way back down when we passed several trucks coming up - road is plowed only 1 lane, perhaps 1 1/2 lanes wide for the most part).
Snowshoes on right from the start; definitely needed as the recently fallen snow hadn't consolidated yet. Wet, heavy, sticky, sloppy with several deep tree well collapses. Gained the west facing ridgeline and the views rapidly improved. Bear Mountain was looking especially impressive. Heard several large avalanches rumble down it's steep south face.
Crested the ridge top at 4600', then a pleasant 1/2 mile stroll along the ridgeline over to the summit. I was happy to see such an expansive view - ALW peaks were all visible, Glacier of course, Kyes, Blanca. Lots of things to see from this summit. Definitely worth the trip. 4 miles round trip and 2700' vertical.

Looks like Alti-Dude recovered enough from the Oakes experience for another snowshoe trip.
Frog is a nice short one to get some quick views.

Wait a sec, can the whippets pull a sled? Time to start waterproofing my cast, getting out my snow gear and building a Jo-pulk.

Hey man, nice shots ! Not to rub it in, but I remember 2-3 years ago in January doing Frog, and the snow was so hard we used crampons. Sweet !

Gotta get up there someday. With the Wild Sky attention there's bound to be at least a boot trail eventually, but it would be nice to do it before that happens.

Beautiful shots of the fresh snow on the peaks.
