Yesterday MM & I were off to see the larches in the Teanaway, hoping to beat the crowds by visiting on a Friday w/less-than-perfect weather. To our surprise everyone & their grandmothers were there. doh.gif dizzy.gif doh.gif We set off on the Esmeralda Basin trail, located at the very end of the NF Teanaway River rd. (which had more potholes than what I remember from previous yrs.). It was cloudy & cold. @ least 1/2 a dozen cars were already in the lot, & 3 more arrived as we were gearing up. hmmm.gif

The trail starts off wide & a little steep, reaching the junction w/the Ingalls Way Trail in short order.

We turned right onto the Way trail, ascending switchbacks for a couple mi. until reaching the junction w/the Longs Pass trail, where we veered left to continue on the Way trail. We didn't see our 1st larch until just below Ingalls Pass.

Upon reaching Ingalls Pass, we stopped for a quick snack & then turned west up the ridge toward Fortune Pk. There are some hints of a trail in certain spots, but for the most part it is a scramble up/over/around rocky bulges before finally relenting to a walk-up for the last bit to the peak. The forecast of "partly sunny" was more accurately described as "mostly cloudy & ridiculously cold". suuure.gif

We were fortunate to have the clouds lift off Fortune Pk.'s summit by the time we arrived, as well as off the tops of many other peaks around us. The icing on the cake would've been to have Stuart come out of hiding, especially since the last couple of times I hiked in this area the mtn. was enveloped in low clouds. Oh well, I'll just have to come back again sometime. up.gif

After battling the biting cold long enough, we headed down the west ridge of the pk. toward the Lk. Ann trail. This side of the mtn. had a trail of sorts & is much steeper, though not as many rock obstacles along the way. We lost the trail as it neared the bottom, but by that point it was easy enough to spot the Lk. Ann trail intersecting ahead.

It was a nice day out despite the clouds & cold, but the larches have yet to hit their peak. Should be even nicer in the next week or 2.... cool.gif

This trip had a nice perspective for me, on mountains that we've done and mountains that we still want to do. We didn't get to see Stuart, but at least the clouds lifted enough to see most things around us. We knew it was going to be cold, but after all the nice weather we've been having, I still wasn't quite prepared for the 28 deg. plus (or should I say minus) wind chill on the summit. eek.gif Anyway, here are my pictures:

Looks like it. When it dries up varies from year to year, usually between early August and mid-September. As I have previously observed, Lake CFG is the smallest thing I've ever seen labeled a "lake" on a map.

Wrong direction for Jolly (based on the pano). It's in the right place and based on GE looks like The Cradle.

Yeah, The Cradle makes sense. I hadn't figured out which direction from Fortune the pic was taken. Gotta ski that bowl on The Cradle one of these years.
