On the real Bandera summit right now with Alti-Babe, yukon222, and the whippets. Traverse from West Bandera took a half hour - perfect snow conditions on the connecting ridge.

I've been up to the "standard" Bandera summit at the western end of the ridge time many times but had never bothered to travel another 25 minutes to the named summit as shown on USGS. The views from the true summit are vastly better - much larger summit to relax on, unobstructed 360° views and no people. I'll definitely be back!!

Your right, the views are better and it's more fun, when I called it the true summit a lot of folks got upset so now I just call it the second summit in line with the 100 Hikes book.

Wondered if we might see some pics, or if Alti-Dude's short summit missive would be it. Glad you posted these - love the Rainier pic! Not that I'll ever try, but was the traverse easier with the (now melting) snow, or will it still be a half hour jaunt in bare summer conditions? Did you retrace steps back to the west summit or sweep down on one side or the other?

Simple now with the consolidated snow covering the rocks and possible brush. Traces of bootpath now where there is a bit of bare ground. Since I haven't done it in the summer, can't say for sure but sure seems like it would not be difficult at all after the snow is gone. Still should only take 30-35 minutes then.

Hey, dude... step back, would ya? I've never been sure if I've made the true (second) summit or not... I like Bandera though for a close, quick run-up. Nice to see snow pics of it.

Easier to figure out with no snow. Once you think you are on the top, look to the hiker's right and realize there is more uphill to go. Classic false summit. When I first did it there was no Manning trail, just an uphill grind. Had a few choice words when I thought I had made the summit, only to find a ridge walk to the high point! rant.gif But all was soon forgotten as that was one of my first peaks and the chance to look down on a single engine plane following I-90. cool.gif

Life is short, hike hard...
