Took a quick trip up to Barlow Point on Sunday, May 24th. The parking at Barlow Pass was a bit crowded. Since we had never been before, this was an adventure. It took a bit of hunting to locate the trail, since the area at the trail head was covered in snow. (From the info board, go left until you see the little 4x4 post. From there, go right) Once we finally found the trail, we quickly left the snow and had a very nice, quiet one mile hike up to Barlow Point. The trail is steep and climbs quickly, but is not too strenuous. On the way up, we ran into two ladies from Iceland on their way down. Turns out one of them is part of the group that maintains that trail. For the trip in, those are the only two folks we saw. We ran into snow at the very end of the trail, allowing us to cool off the water bottles. We had the point to ourselves and discovered that this little place is indeed worth the drive and hike. The views from the point are just gorgeous. Mt. Dickerman looms right over the point dominating the main view. Once out on the point, the view down the valley is great as well. After a bit, we took the trip down and, close to the bottom, met up with a couple of other hikers on their way up. The point doesn't have the draw of Monte Cristo, but it is worth a little side trip up if you are in the area. Since this is my first trip report, I haven't yet figured out how to add some eye candy. So for now, I'll leave it as a mystery and just add my recommendations. loadmaster annie

Thanks for the report and welcome to the site. Here's what it looked like in 1961:

Welcome. I did Barlow Pass so long ago I forgot there was a lookout. Or was there? You don't mention it.

The lookout was removed in 1965. That's what the trail was built for.

That is a long ways to come to maintain a trail. She must really like it. wink.gif

Thanks Schroder -- I didn't think I was going senile quite yet.
