Dog Mountain is probably the most popular hike in the Columbia River Gorge this time of year. This is the prime bloom season and things are really looking good this year.
The trail starts climbing right at the trailhead. The lower forests were in full bloom of various woodland species.
The lower meadows were a touch past their prime.
The upper meadows, though were astonishing, The headliner is balsamroot, but I saw 80 different species of flowers in a four hour hike.
I continued north from the summit. There were fewer people here (only about six or eight in sight at once).
I came across a meadow filled with mating butterflies.
The trip on the Augspurger Mountain Trails was more of the same.
Fabulous day!
I’ve got a list of all 80 varieties in the ID forum on Portland Hikers.
Awesome. Dog is one of my favs for flowers. I was at Tom McCall point a few weeks back for the show there and it was almost as good as Dog Mountain except there was no crowd.
