I saw a bunch of these "Olympic Faces" leaves when hiking down from Lena Lake. At first I thought it was some little kid poking holes in leaves as they rambled down the trail with their family. Then kept seeing more and more of them. What they heck are they?
They are created by various persons, with varying degrees of perfection. Bruce the Backcountry Ranger might be the instigator (unconfirmed?) and certainly the most prolific and skilled in their manufacture. See https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7963479 for more!
OMG lol.gif way too funny...

This sounds like a great trip but somehow I couldn't get past the picture of the future mountaineer. Love the shirt too!

Great looking trip!!! What a great group of people to head up there with. Surprisingly I recognize over half of your group. Seeing your pictures makes me want to get the motivation to get back into the mountains again!!

Thanks so much for all the nice comments. I appreciate our Olympic experts and the incredible labeling job on the pano. The goat followed us literally to the summit. He even licked Bill's boot! lol.gif

I need to add this to my "to do" list for the Olympic Mountains, alongside places like Mount Olympus, Gray Wolf Ridge, Mount Jupiter, etc.

A great trip report! I'm amazed at how little snow is left up there, and how much has melted just since Memorial Day.

Nice one Magellan! Next time I climb The Brothers I'll have to do it this time of the year so that there will be snow to climb in the Hourglass.
HJT - To climb the area known as the hourglass you may need to go very early in the season (but still late enough to avoid avalanche danger). I've done this trip several times and I've attempted the hourglass on two of the trips. Both times, there ended up not being enough snow, so we had to descend all the way back down to the bottom of the hourglass (roughly 150 to 200 vertical feet) and climb around it on the ridge. The worst part about the hourglass is that you can't tell whether there will be enough snow in it, until you've almost reached the top of it. If there is not enough snow, you'll find yourself at a dead end with a more or less sheer rock wall in front of you. On warmer days, there can be a waterfall falling down the rock face, which creates about a four foot gap between the edge of the snow and the rock wall. It's been atleast 10 years since the last time that I tried going up the hourglass, but I think my memory of it is reasonably accurate. I will say though, that it is an interesting route, even if it often leads to a dead end. The walls almost seem to close in on you as you ascend, and at some points, it seemed to be less than 6 feet wide. Also, near the top there is often times a deep "well" in the snow that can be roughly 5 feet in diameter and as much as 20 to 30 feet deep. So the experience may be worth it, even if you have to turn back at the last minute.
