The Mad River is a gem of a little stream tucked away on the Entiat Ridge. The Xterra made short work of the "road" up to Maverick Saddle from Chiwawa Loop Road near Fish Lake. A few mosquitoes greeted me so I was quickly off for a look at the conditions up to Cougar Peak. After a mile, I crossed the sturdy bridge and found the unsigned trail that heads up Jimmy Creek just before the rockslide. Patchy snow gave way to 3-5 feet in the upper Jimmy Creek valley. Blazes and cut logs were soon lost and I gave in to retreat, not knowing where the Cougar Peak trail would intersect. Back at the rig early, I decided to lumber back home on the Entiat Summit Road, passing through the 15 year old fire scorched earth and exiting down Eagle Creek Road. I'll be back in Mad River country for more exploring in a couple weeks when the snow is gone. High clearance vehicle suggested, but not a must. Logs have been cut out, but some brush remains and recent gully washers have left a mark.Mad River Entiat Summit Ridge Road Chiwaukums
