Recently I was given a bunch of local mining papers from the estate of the grandfather of a friend of mine that was somehow involved in mining in Snohomish County. I came across this promotional brochure for the 45 mines that I thought I'd share. I am posting them as jpgs in the full resolution I scanned them in.
Here are the covers of a couple of newer ones I found among the papers. I won't post the Wilkie book because of copyrights

Thanks for posting Schroder. I wouldn't worry too much about copyright on Rosemary Wilkie's book; A Broad Bold Ledge of Gold. The copyright on it ran out many years ago and I'm sorry to say, she passed away some years ago too. I would think she would be proud that someone would re-print her book for others to enjoy...even if it is just a scan on a website. It is a fine book, with a lot of information not found other places. Trouble is, that she didn't provide any bibliography or references in it, so there is no way of confirming it. In all due respect to her, at the time she and Dell ran the lodge there, many old timers still were around who lived and worked around Monte Cristo. Maybe she got her information from them. Who knows. Just wish she would have added references.

A Broad Bold Ledge of Gold is available from the Seattle Public Library. Much to my astonishment, it's a circulating copy! The prose style is very sweet and quaint. You've got to take anything in there with a fairly large helping of salt, though. Among other things, it's got the story of the Number 7 tunnel collapsing and killing the Chinese workers (there were no Chinese workers, and no one was killed, so that bit's 1/3 right), and another bit mentioning someone burning down the UCC concentrator (which, AFAIK, collapsed under snow). I'd love to have a copy of that book.

I'll work on a pdf copy of Wilkie's book when I have the chance. Here are a couple of photos I took of the 45 Mine when coming off of Hall Peak in 1970. It was quite an effort to get down from here.

That chunk of breakdown sitting inside the tunnel entrance is pretty scary.

Just for perspective - the $47,000 value of shipments from the 45 Mines is about $1 million in today's prices. That's not much return for the effort put into this project.

45 mine lower entrance
For those of you that have a penchant for brush, there is a lower mine that was excavated hoping to intercept the 45 Mine ore body at depth. It is very interesting, because as was so often the case in the Cascades, the fault that contained the 45 Mine large ore body, had no mineralization about 600 feet lower elevation, just the fault. I am sure there was disappointment because there was a lot of tunnel excavated and no return on the investment.

I've got some more historic documents of the Monte Cristo area if someone wants to scan and post them. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of Sam Strom's remembrance and the John McDonald Wilmans remembrances. May be others too. Been a long time since I last purged my files.
