Wed Jun 24, 2009 10:12 am iron hit by truck while bicycling
iron an avid bicycle commuter(as well as hiker extraordinaire) was hit by a truck this morning and is in the er at harborview with a broken hip and other injuries. he is such a good guy that he called me right away to let me know that he could not make it for our trip this weekend. i will keep you posted with details as i find out more. a few prayers could not hurt.
update 2:00pm wednesday 6-24-09:
i visited iron in the er and he looked really good considering.
he does not have a broken hip, but a broken femur. he will have surgery tomorrow morning and they will put in a plate. he is one tough guy and has such a positive attitude. i am lucky that we met and became friends! more later.
update 9:30pm wednesday 6-24-09:
iron is in harborview awaiting surgery.
iron's roommate says:
"...mike is doing ok, but definitely in and out of it - probably induced by all the morhpine to keep the pain down i imagine.
i think he liked the fact that some people from nwhikers stopped by. tomorrow i imagine he'll be quite out of it all day due to the surgery, but i'm sure friday or saturday or until he gets out, he'd enjoy visitors stopping by."
update 11:00pm wednesday 6-24-09:
hotpantz says:
"Mike certainly does appreciate the calls and random visits.
He seems to be doing well in general. He's in quite a bit of pain,
but the morphine is helping and allowing him to sleep. He was eating
some before I left as well. His spirits are as good as can be
expected. You know Mike, always looking to see the positive and make
the most out of a situation.
Right now, they are planning on surgery tomorrow, but don't have a
time. I think as long as no major trauma cases come tonight, he'll
have surgery tomorrow morning at 7:30 with Dr. Krieg. They will put
in a plate and a screw through the shaft and into the head of his
femur. They chose this option to avoid major muscle damage, however,
it will mean that he won't be able to bear weight for a longer amount
of time; crutches for 6-8 weeks- lots of fun for a mountain climber:)
He will probably be in the hospital for a few days still based on pain
level and a few other things.
Visits, calls, and prayers are all very welcome and encouraged!"
update 4:00pm thursday 6-25-09:
i am happy to report that iron was visited by the medical examiner (no, he did not die, he is iron's good buddy michael aka the medical examiner) and myself. iron responded, as one would expect, with calls for more drugs! iron was beat down from surgery, but looking good.
iron heard that surgery went well and hopes to return home sometime this weekend.
hotpantz says: "He seems to be doing pretty well post-surg- very sleepy."
we agree with hotpantz's observation.

update 11:30pm thursday 6-25-09:
hotpantz says: "A little update for the day. Mike had a successful surgery. I spoke
with one of the people on the surgery team, who said it went very
well. He'll be on crutches for 6-8 weeks with the ability to put a
little weight through his leg.
His spirits were a little lower today mainly due to frustration at the
lack of consistent sleep available in a hospital, but he was up in the
evening and starting to eat and looked ready to rally."
update 7:00pm monday 6-29-09:
iron is home from the hospital - but not without a little entertainment before he left. when he checked out they asked if he wanted a wheelchair. iron decline and crutched out. it was not a short distance. we stopped at the cafeteria and iron slid his tray up to the seated cashier who after she was done ringing him up, wanted him to put away his tray so she would not have to get up. i have not laughed so hard in a while, we both did. i hope his stitches didn't bust.
they did not give him enough meds to hold him until he reached home. so getting the drugs from the pharmacy became a priority.
but the dr. who wrote the prescription for all his meds failed to fill the form out right and then the hospital gave the run-around(along with dropped calls, etc...) to the pharmacy, so i can only imagine what iron felt like WAITING 3+ HOURS for his drugs. part of the problem was the hospital sent the prescription to the wrong pharmacy. these are just a sampling of his entertainment menu. i am sure iron will provide some more rave reviews of that hospital.
still iron is looking good and was strong willed in getting in and out of the car and up his stairs at home.

Oh, my God... That's horrible.
Hoping you heal quickly and are feeling better soon, Iron.
