Climber Dies After Fall In Snohomish County
Posted: 7:05 pm PDT July 5, 2009

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. -- A climber fell and died in the Monte Cristo area of Snohomish County on Sunday, said Rebecca Hover of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
A ranger called 911 at about 5 p.m. after the victim’s climbing partner reported the incident, Hover said.
Snohomish County Search and Rescue workers recovered the body several hours later.
No information has been released about the victim or their climbing partner.
Monte Cristo is located off the Mountain Loop Highway in the Barlow Pass area, between Darrington and Granite Falls.

KONG 6/16 story just aired indicating it was a 39 y.o. female from King County, but they didn't know if she was experienced in climbing or not.

An unfortunate turn of events for all.  My thoughts go out to her partner, family and friends.

Please, everyone, be careful out there.  The epic TR's are fantastic but none are worth your life.

The hiker said his female hiking partner slipped while walking across a snow field on Monte Cristo Peak. She tried to use her ice axe to stop herself from falling over the edge, but was unsuccessful.

It sounds like it was on the back side. Very tragic.

Fell from approx 6500' level above the Cadet Creek drainage. Unroped. Very tragic.

On Friday the 3rd, extracted a male with a lacerated leg and his partner from a ledge at 3800' north face of Mt. Index and immediately after that extracted a hiker with a severly dislocated knee from Copper Creek Falls (2200')at the eastern foot of Big Bear Mtn. ( Immediately south of Three Fingers)

Tis the season......

Be careful out there!

Very disturbing!  Were they hikers or climbers; the news sources are confusing. I wonder what she did wrong for the ice axe arrest to have not worked?  I'm sure there are lessons to be learned and would be interested to  hear of them once the facts are known.  Was roping-up warranted? Where they wearing traction devices?  Where they experienced?

Of course I don't know this, I think the vast majority of people carrying axes have never practised self arrest with them in the first place.  Who knows whether she ever had.  Something didn't work right that's for sure.

At a certain pitch and snow hardness, self-arrest becomes near impossible due to the acceleration (which can be mind-boggling and paralyzing with fear unless you have a VERY cool head) and lack of penetration of the ice tool... The place where that is most often demonstrated is the base of the Inter Glacier in late summer.

We were shown this first-hand during glacier training in Switzerland: They had us glissade on our feet on a steep slope with an excellent clear runout on the bottom, then purposely wipe out and try the arrest. Nobody managed to stop themselves prior to the slope shallowing out, and everyone was awed by the rate of acceleration...

The roping is always questionable, as on Mt. Hood...if you don't protect, will you increase the chance of yanking your partner off and risking two or more lives rather than just one?

Not that you should learn from videos, but here is a good review by a competent chap...

Do be careful - we had a busy day on the 4th as well, with a plethora of both mountain and water accidents...

Whenever there is a passing of a person, I'm reminded of how temporary our stay is here and that any one of us may pass for any number of possibilities at any given moment. Our gift to each other, is to live life to the fullest and to cherish the time we have with all of our relations in celebration of Life and friendship, to do otherwise, is to cheat ourselves out of how great Life can truly be.

May this young lady RIP and to all of her relations, may they find what they need to move themselves forward in a good way. Cherish the memories and never forget the many stories she wove together in your lives, honor all that is good and forgive her short comings. In this way you may truly honor her for who she truly was in this short Life of hers.

Everyone get back to celebrating Life with each other and don't forget to share the best you have to offer.

Mitakuye Oyasin - A Lakota Indian Prayer

There is a simple but profound Lakota prayer: Mitakuye Oyasin.
These two words mean All My Relations or We are All Related.
To pray this prayer is to petition God on behalf of everyone and everything on Earth.
Mitakuye Oyasin honors the sacredness of each person's individual spiritual path, acknowledges the sacredness of all life (human, animal, plant, etc.) and creates an energy of awareness which strengthens not only the person who prays but the entire planet.
