We are both lame! K has sore knees after coming down Little Jack last week. Bob has his chronic hip problem, plus a bruised heel and achilles tendonitis. We are wrecks! It was just too nice of a day to stay home and rest, so we chose a short, easy hike with scenery.
There were about 30 cars in the Alpental parking lot when we arrived, just before 9:00 AM. We were ahead of the rush, passing only a few people. The trail is in great shape as usual, with a few patches of hard snow below the pass (no ice ax or traction devices needed).
The last time we did this trail was last November on the way to Wright Mt. It was a picture post card day, with glissening fresh snow. That was probably the prettiest we have even seen Snow Lake (and beyond), so we included 3 comparison photos.
On the way out it was a zoo! Throngs on people were heading up the trail in the heat of the day! We were glad we had a fairly early start.

Nice!
I love the before and after pics!
Snow lake is one I have never done. A bit of a drive for me since I live in the Portland area, but it is such a quintessential hike, I feel it's like a rite of passage for every hiker in the Pacific Northwest. That, Mt. Si, Multnomah Falls and Paradise (I'm 2 for 4).
I'm gonna try to get up in that area at least once this summer. Did Denny Creek/Melakwa Lake last July and it was great.

Be sure to continue past Snow Lake to Gem Lake. You will leave the crowds behind, and the scenery is wonderful!

Snow Lake is actually more rugged and scenic than I imagined. Hope you heal up soon.

Polar Bear,
Probably 1/2 of the trail from the pass down to the lake is still snow covered. but the route is easy to follow.

Skiing will cure that--and L&L will have a chance to experience the ultimate canine thrill of sticking a head out of a fast-moving sling. Has Luis been a bad boy or is the thing around his mouth a gentle lead? tdd

I know a spoiled pooch when I see one (or two). Those are the cutest little dogs. Plump. PiB and I left Seattle once at 5 AM to beat the crowds to Snow Lake. It was great.

The only reason (IMO) Snow lake is kind-of looked down-upon (not from the ridge!) is because of how crowded the trail is. The lake itself, the surrounding country, meadows, mountains, etc, is quite beautiful. If you have never been, you should go. On a weekday, the crowds might even be reasonable.
