The first part is mostly a road walk, followed by a fairly straight forward ridge walk. I took the road up to the logged out area at the end, then headed up to the ridge. From there I worked my way up to Iron. Got some nice views, then headed back down. Once back at the truck I motored over the old Sunset Mine area, and took a plunge in the nice cold Trout Creek.

Is there any snow left on the ridgetop? I went there last year, but this year I would like to do a traverse of the entire ridgeline.

The road is "passable crazy.gif " within approx 3/4 of a mile from the top. But, it is now off limits due to the Wildsky act. down.gif down.gif The boundary was pretty much drawn around the mine site. My understanding the reason for this was to eliminate any clean up complications....but wait confused.gif CLERA is not bound by Wilderness Regulations huh.gif and can use any motorized stuff the want to.

Like Hulk said, passable to a quad most of the way. It looked like a jeep made it up there recently (probably lifted and locked tho....) If you are going to do it, now is the time, as there are no signs up yet. Anyone that is thinking of exploring this area , get it done in the next year or two. Once the roads are closed to 4x4 traffic they will get brushy is an astonishingly short period of time.

There are some great, old fisherman trails throughout the Trout Creek valley. Some of them lead up odd routes to the surrounding mountains, or so I have heard. Definitely a place worth exploring. A SIDE NOTE: As much as I love the concept and creation of the Wild Sky Wilderness, as I grew up in Gold Bar and that area is close to my heart, I think it has been poorly thought-out and handled since its designation. "Wild" is being taken to a whole new level; that can be good or bad.

Hiked route to view point twice; never did go to the summit at Iron Mtn. Doggoneit! I like the reief of Trout Cr. valley afforded, esp. in these photos from Iron's summit. Thank you for the interesting view of Pinnacle Mountain...certainly has an odd look to it from Iron. From Scorpion Mountain, it really does have the look that carries its name.
