Today feels like the beginning of fall. There is a definite change in the air. Got me thinking about where I will take my annual Sept. backpack trip to hear (and hopefully watch) the bugle of the Roosevelt elk. It's something I look forward to every year. Where are you planning to go for your fall trip? I hear the larches are pretty spectacular. I've never seen em in person. What else do people look forward to in the fall in the mountains? "If You Knew September" by John Nelson I wish you knew September from a trail up near the sky, and knew the thrill and splendor of a Colorado high. Oh, you should know September's slopes blessed by aspen trees, partake the mountain's medicine as heart and mind it frees. I wish you knew the power of this hardened dapple gray strengthened by the golden flow of a cool crisp autumn day. You should know September's sun as it bathes your cares away astride a sturdy mountain horse with gentle rocking sway. I wish you knew the coyote's verse of the old time siren's song, felt the pack's camaraderie, knew the urge to sing along. Oh, you should know the passion of the bull elk's shrill reply that tugs at your anceint soul that's been lost to time gone by. How I wish you knew September from times spent near the wild, and knew life close to a place where God and nature smiled. For if you knew September in the way it's meant to be, you'd leave convention far behind to be riding here with me.

.....leaving me wanting to return over and over in what ever capacity that may be, even if one day my knees are too old and I can only see the mountains from my porch. Jason Hummel

Entiat or Pasayten (PCT seven passes) or Horseshoe Basin, either for the larches, for three days at the end of Sept. Planning it now.

Blueberries. Larches. Warm sunny days with an undercurrent of crisp cool breezes. Maybe even a little frost on the tent in the morning. Best hiking all year if it's not raining.

I'm heading through the Pasayten for 2 weeks. biggrin.gif No biting bugs, huckle and blue berries, larches starting to turn, clear bright days and cool nights. Prime time backpacking season is right now until the snow flies, if you ask me. cool.gif

A change in the air, yup. Afternoon shadows have a seemingly crisper aspect suddenly.

Naw, I'd like to wait until after October 9th. Then, bring it on.

Leaving this Friday for an 8 day sea kayaking trip on the north end of Vancouver Island with some day hikes enroute. After that I have my sights on Whittier Peak...

Friends, Romans, and fellow countrymen, it is not even close to Fall yet. It isn't even September yet, at least not for a few more hours, and then you still have 21 days before even the first day of Fall which is only legally Fall but not the spirit of Fall. the skis did not twitch the leaves have always been this color blue berries do happen in Summer cool air is as much a part of Summer as warm air in the PNW I'm not going to make a legal case out of this because I would win. Wishing away Summer won't make it go away. I'm sure some people are aleady putting on their galoshes for a joyful tromp up the Boulder River in the rain, but weather conditions for said tromp are still a loooonnng ways off. Mosquitos are still buzzing around my ear as I try to get to sleep. It's Summer. biggrin.gif up.gif up.gif Q.E.D.

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.
