After reading all the TRs with great pictues on Park Butte I finally got up there last weekend. I ski the west side of Baker at least once a year, so it was nice to see the view looking back over at the crevases we blithly slide over.
Park Butte Lookout BIG stitch of Mt. Baker's west face made from 23 telephoto shots
An old timer I met on the trail, who seemed to know what he was talking about, told me the berries were past their prime due to frost, but they tasted mighty fine to me.
 Blue berry fields forever
When I checked the National Weather Service Saturday morning it said a low of 40 so I packed my light summer bag and bivy sack. A cool breeze forced me into all my clothes near sunset, but I was fine when I went to bed by a tarn and fell asleep easily. (edit - it has been brought to my attention that there is no camping near the tarns, I didn't see any signs about that, but it makes sense, so please don't follow my poor example. Camp at the pass, or the lookout and hike to the tarns for the views.)
Mt. Baker Sunset 3 Trees, no tarn
I woke up around midnight shivering and put on the parka I'd been using as a pillow. It was too late though, I'd already gotten chilled and never really warmed up all night. There was frost on my bivy sack and the tarn was iced over when I got up. Teaches me to listen to the weather report, but I guess it was a good test of the limits of a Marmot Atom! Man that hot coffee tasted good!

23 shots for the big stictch of baker? how'd you get it to come out so clean in your merging process?

Iron, I normally try Photoshop first, but on my computer it doesn't handle tricky or huge pans very well. A year ago I got Autopanopro, a top notch stitching program that I highly recomend if panoramas are your thing.

Awesome pictures Jim. I'm still hoping to spend the night in the lookout sometime this fall but I better get to it fairly soon here or it may be too late for the year. I love "3 Tree Tarn Dawn". |

Well photographed J.D.!
A fine display of why this is one of my all time favorite trails (plus it's the closest N. Cascade trail to my house).
Thanks for sharing.

Nice work on the big stitch!
And love this icy tarn pic.
Thanks for posting, Jim!

Wow, Jim! Nice shots! Love the "3 Trees, no tarn", thinking it would look mighty nice next to my stone fireplace... How much for a print? And how did you get such a steady shot, with all the shivering and such? |

Gorgeous! A little frost on the nose and toes was worth it, don'tcha think?
I saw a number of enviable campsites along the RR Grade, but your perspective from the Butte makes me think twice about my future accommodations.

I think I saw you. I was with a group camping across the tarn. We didn't realize it wasn't allowed either. Oops. Next time, I'll camp on Railroad Grade - pretty nice views there. |

Nicely done, Jim! I appreciate the effort for the panos and wouldn't mind purchasing one one of these days.
