Hey folks, my friends Richard, Andy and I (I'm Cale) went for a training hike up what should have been the Muir Snowfield last Saturday. As many have commented.... it's not much of a snowfield anymore. However, the weather was wrong and we had snow all the way from the parking lot! Except when you get up to Moon Rocks -> Anvil Rock which is all trail. We got up early and got up there quickly. By the time we got to Anvil Rock and got out, the snowing quit and the sky sorta opened up. Therefore, we got a few pix in foggy clouds and blue sky. That's when the ROUTEFINDING started. First, it was an icefield above Anvil. Full on water ice where crampons were nice. Also, it meant you couldn't really find "TRAIL". Everyone pretty much took their own path. When the sky opened, we were WAY OVER TO THE RIGHT of where the normal trail goes. Camp Muir was extremely Northwest of our location. So, we started working our way over MANY crevasses. Finally, we got to some VERY LARGE ones and decided we'd turn back. One of us was getting very uncomfortable not being roped up on a glacier, ahem, snowfield with large crevasses. Anyhow, enjoy the pics... Thought it would be nice to share actual crevasse pictures on the snowfield (since there aren't very many out there)....

I take it without crampons this ascent would be impossible?

Actually, no. Not impossible, just not that fun. Very slippery but not much of a fall line. There was no place on the hike where you couldn't have got away with Yaktrax. Having full crampons was nice just for the grip. However, most of the place where you used them could have been walked on with some careful stepping.
My preference: Crampons or Yaktrax.

Thanks for the update! The crevasses are not as bad as when I went! I saw one that looked like a real glacier crevasse and was over hanging and was a bit wide which even being near was worry some, especially considering I was unroped and away from people. I'm not saying that to make the ones on this trip seem lame which they too seem a bit worry some, but looks like much of them are covered which perhaps more potential for hidden ones? Nice trip report.

Not impossible, but I would suggest brining them. The way down without crampons is a bit worrysome.
