I have a 7th/8th grade Adventure Education class at Langley Middle School on Whidbey Island. For years, we have been taking the train to Santa Barbara, California, for backpacking on Santa Cruz Island during the month of January and March. Our superintendent and school board have rejected this year's trips to California. For years, I have taken students out on the Washington coast during the months of October and June. We backpack from Rialto Beach to Cape Alava. We have always made it a point to escape the weather up here and head south during the winter and early spring. My question is this: Are there any twenty to twenty-five mile/five day hikes that my 7th/8th grade Adventure Education class could take in Washington in the month of January and/or March that you would highly recommend? I am not looking for a snowshoeing/winter camping experience for these kids. For past trip information see: http://www.langleymiddleschooladventureeducation.blogspot.com/ Thanks, Nels Bergquist

+1,000 up.gif up.gif Just dress warm and know you may well have to pack in water but so many great trips. As well if the kids don't mind freezing, wait till a clear weekend and do a rain forest hike in the Olympics. Being able to have fires down low makes even nasty days enjoyable! - And March can be nice out there. We often do our trips in that month. Still cool but you can smell spring!
