Last Friday MM, Todd, & I ventured to the south end once again to tag Jumbo & Sunrise Pks. Situated on Juniper Ridge in the Gifford Pinchot Natl. Forest, these peaks offered 4-volcano views (Rainier, Adams, St. Helens, & Mt. Hood) as well as many other peaks including those in the Goat Rocks wilderness.
We set out early on Friday & made our way down to the Sunrise TH. This TH is reached by driving south from Randle on FRs 25 & 23 (paved) & then onto FR 2324 (about 5 mi. of unpaved but decent rd.). While it was pretty chilly leaving town before dawn, we opened the doors to sunny skies & warm temps ~ 3 hrs. later.

The trail starts out forested & steep, but soon breaks out into open slopes of berry bushes rich w/fall color. We saw a little frog & some mushrooms along the way.

Adams & Hood came into view, as well as our 1st destination for the day: Jumbo Pk.
Mt. Adams Mt. Hood Jumbo Pk. comes into view Sunrise Pk. The boys on the trail Adams & fall color
In about a mi. we reached the 1st junction. Left heads toward a saddle & another junction w/the Juniper Ridge trail, & right goes uphill toward Sunrise Pk. We stayed left & traversed the slope toward the saddle, dropping a little in elevation to get there.
Junction w/trail up to Sunrise Pk. Junction w/Juniper Ridge trail Cliffs Sunrise Pk. Berries - yum! Jumbo Pk.
After passing the 2nd junction many berry bushes, we rounded the west side of Juniper Ridge & walked by an impressive-looking cliffy peak that evidently had no name.

As we approached Jumbo, we kept our eye out for a route up to the top. After seeing a faint trail going up the north end, a nasty gully on the west side, & another (not so nasty but still sketchy) gully on the south, we backtracked a bit to pick up the trail on the north side. It looked more like an animal trail but nevertheless put us on top, w/only 1 semi-exposed/slippery section.

The views from the top were great in all directions. We sat in the shade & snacked, taking in the views. Meanwhile, there was a rapidly forming smoke cloud forming out toward the Goat Rocks.

Next, it was time to head back down & tag Sunrise Pk. before the day was done. Sunrise is a very short hike from the trailhead so we saved it to do on the way out. After coming down from Jumbo & getting back to the main trail, Todd sat down for a bit to dump the dirt/rocks out of his boots before continuing on. After a few minutes he caught up, but shortly thereafter realized his GPS was missing & went back to find it while MM & I continued on. Turns out it fell out of his pocket when he sat down; he found it in that spot. He caught up to us not long after we passed the junction @ the saddle.
Cool rock Ant nest
The Juniper Ridge trail that traverses the west slope of Sunrise is very chewed up by dirt bikes & the soil is like powder. We kept distance from one another in the hopes of not inhaling too much dust. We reached the next junction where the ridge trail continues north & another trail switchbacks up Sunrise Pk. Not long after that there is one final junction, where we turned left to walk the last few minutes to the top. The very top is a little airy & there's a handrail to use for the final steps. The top is flat since there used to be a lookout, & the views once again were in all directions.

The temp was dropping & so was the sun, so we didn't spend too long on top. On the way down we got some shadow shots & the moon had become visible directly above Mt. Hood.

We made it out before needing headlamps , then headed back to Randle for the usual post-hike eats.

No stopping this group Mike!
I really enjoyed this area. The peaks all look very cliffy, but have reasonable routes up. I hope I never forget the strawberry fest I had up there.
ETA: Just noticed this is a month old.

Great stuff, the more pics the better
I just noticed something - there haven't been too many pics of Mt. Adams on this site in the time I've been involved here, even though it's the 3rd highest peak in WA, OR and ID......anyone ever wonder about that?

That ant nest looks like it belongs in the wilds of Africa. Recently read about a strain of very aggressive omnivorous ants that are marching their way around southern Texas and Florida, a strain even hungrier than their fire ants. So glad to live in our peaceful NW with our well-mannered bears, cougars, and rattlers!
I'm definitely copying this one next fall. Looks like the perfect overnight for me, if there's camping far enough away from the ant mounds. Any water around there, or does one just gorge on berries for hydration?

I don't remember seeing any water. You'd probably need to carry enough for your whole trip. There were a lot of berries though, at least.
