we all joined modern art as he finished climbing washington's highest 100 peaks with this trip up abernathy pk. big celebration!

modern wanted to do a overnight trip. i felt abernathy would be a day trip and since it was such a long drive, i figured i could do gilbert mt while they hiked up to camp and then meet them there the next day with the added bonus of not having to carry overnight gear. fortunately t-man joined me. we all would spend a cold night, neher-man said it was 7 degrees!
a large group, modern and jazzy jo, jb and howard dean's sister, grateful scott, neher-man, the newlyweds jim and mary ann, roy and slam dunc hiked up to camp at scatter lake while t-man and i did gilbert mt. the big group wanted a leisurely two day trip as some were not in enough shape to do abernathy as a day trip. in the morning, t-man and i drove to the scatter lake trailhead(from gilbert) where we met up with iron(he did an enchantments traverse the previous day) and we boogied up by headlamp to scatter lake. we wanted to catch the group before they left the lake for the ridge.
at scatter lake(larch city) we joined everyone standing in front of their nice fire while they finished breakfast and readied themselves to go. inertia, it takes a long time for big groups to roll. slam dunc was ready first so i took the opportunity for us to start early and visit while we leisurely walked up to ridge. we could have taken the scree to the top, but dunc pointed to a rock band and i was more than happy to join him in some fun, optional, class three scrambling. iron soon caught up to us and enjoyed it too. once on the ridge, we put on more clothes and waited for the rest of the group. most took the easy scree up. we all waited so modern could be the first to summit. most of us formed a little trekking pole arbor for iron to pass under as he tread the last steps to the summit. we placed a new register and celebrated! champagne and cookies(thanks to iron). interestingly enough, there were folks from many generations, with almost every decade represented - 20somethings, 30s?, 40s, 50's, 70's, 80's. what a great time celebrating and visiting with buddies from so many other trips!
route from lake: hike scree up. it looks harder than it is, but any route is easy.
equipment: champagne, cookies and cameras

i think some folks have me confused with modern as he is one of my many fav climbing partners. still i am not modern, but that is definitely his pic and he told me about meeting a couple of others on his climb of bonanza.

Gotcha.
Sorry, I tend to sometimes glaze over the details on trip reports. My apology.
However, while I was reading it I was thinking that you-( boo) was a younger gentleman and was associated with/ co-author of the Summit Routes guide book.Hopefully, Art sees your trip report and my post tho. Not sure if he is a member of this forum.
I was thinking that you-( boo) was a younger gentleman and was associated with/ co-author of the Summit Routes guide book...
few would call me younger. although i'm very immature, chronilogically i'm 54. i am not associated with any guide book authors although i did run into and chat with brian b from the above name book on tomyhoi mt. he seemd like a very nice guy.

Congrats, Art. We were talking about what an accomplishment it was you two getting Sinister in September; and that you almost certainly had to be going for Abernathy that weekend considering how nice the weather was.
