The original plan called for a drive over to the Teanaway and a bushwhack to the treed summit of Bearjack Ridge West Peak on a marginal weather day... however, finding sunshine on our arrival made it very easy to scrap Bearjack in favor of something that would provide great views. Trailhead: From 29 Pines Campground... drive the N. Fork Teanaway road for ~10.5 miles to the Iron Peak trailhead (3920') on the right side of the road. Good trail for the first 2.5 miles to the saddle (~6200') between Iron Peak and Teanaway Peak... where most people turn south and finish off the .75 mile hike on good trail to Iron Peak... however, for Teanaway Peak, turn north from the saddle and follow a well-worn path and cairns over to the east ridge of Teanaway Peak... then follow your nose to the summit (6779')... Class 1.5 Excellent views in all directions... and while Iron Peak is advertised as the "biggest bang for your buck" in the Teanaway, that should be changed to "biggest bang for your buck on a maintained trail" in the Teanaway... because the views are more extensive from Teanaway Peak. 6.2 miles roundtrip, gaining 2756 feet of elevation. The summit register has been removed. 29 Pines Campground was filled with hunters... as were most of the informal camping spots along the N. Fork Road... Beverly Creek Campground was empty and DeRoux Campground was half empty or half full depending on your point of view. We didn't see any hunters while we were hiking... but did hear three intermittent loud explosions (not gunfire) and their resulting cloud of smoke rising from the saddle between DeRoux Peak and Koppen Mtn... perhaps from a friend of the deer and elk. GPS route and photos of our trip to Teanaway Peak. ..

"Teanaway 70" Peaks List... a guide to hiking and scrambling in the Teanaway Area. ----------------

Thanks for the report. So, Teanway Peak is in the process of being Navahoed, huh? I saw no cairns on my last viist just a few years ago. The boot path petered out at the gully too. Nice shot of the Mary-Bean larch stand. That is seldom photographed. Navahoed - The process of turning a faint climbers boot path into a trail as happened to Navaho Peak..

I was just looking at your your previous trips for the year. Seems like you have a lot of sunny trips. Wish I had better luck with that. E
