Robbin, Dave, and I went to Gray Wolf Mountain Wednesday hopefully trusting reports of good weather. We actually found the Maynard Burn trail this time. Last time we mistakenly wasted time on the old Baldy trail which leads up towards Tyler Peak and Peak B. Maynard Burn proved to be impressively steep.
We traversed the south side of Baldy rather than going over it in hopes of saving time and elevation. Steep scree with some exposure slowed us down considerably but if nothing else it was exciting at a few points. There was one especially nasty spot with no good footing.
Beyond Baldy, having reached the saddle, we ascended more scree to the NE ridge Gray Wolf and this section was very pleasant. There was a band of snow running along the ridge and the summit was not far off. I was surprised to find a gold colored benchmark on the summit.
We spent a half hour on the summit before returning to Baldy. I jogged ahead to tag a second summit knowing Robbin and Dave were not interested. Back at the car the altimeter claimed 5500 feet of gain. 4 hours up and 2.5 down. Not a bad day for November.

Thanks for the report and pictures. I was at Mt. Townsend yesterday. Did you see me wave? It was a great day to be in the mountains.

Good job, and a good training hike for your upcoming big adventure... I had wanted to go to Gray Wolf Ridge this year, but with the weather changes it looks like the plan will have to wait until next year.

60 pounds lighter but not 60 points brighter.

Beautiful area nicely captured on camera. I hope someday to visit that area again...and again...and again. There is a lot to do over here close to Spokane, but I sure do miss my old stomping grounds on the Peninsula.
