Many nwhikers are scattered about the planet during the bleak winter months in our beloved Pacific Northwest. I include myself in that group this year since I was able to arrange a trip to Argentina for some hiking and climbing.
Before coming to Argentina, I spent the holidays in the state in which I grew up, South Carolina. One of my favorite places to visit there is the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge which is located between Hilton Head Island and the mainland and is connected to both via a bridge. The island was deeded to the state with the condition that it can never be developed and serves as an excellent location to see many migrating and local birds.
Pinckney Island South Carolina Some history Example of typical maritime forest on the SC coast Live Oak along salt marsh a little bushwacking Heading over to check out that little island miles and miles of roads Huge old magnolia Looking out to Port Royal Sound from White Point hiking along the marsh Walking map of island Dick Point pond Along the shore One of several ponds built for wildlife on Pinckney Island A pond in the woods on Pinckney Island
The Reserva Ecologica is a protected wetland area located just blocks from the bustling downtown of Buenos Aires. It is also a fine place to observe birds as well as other wildlife. Many locals use it for running and bicycling and as an escape from the cement jungle.Entry to the Reserva Ecologica in Buenos Aires, Argentina Hornero nest Hornero Don't bug the animals Road through the Reserva Ecologica Wetlands Newer construction next to the reserva Wetlands A lizard peaks out Walks in the Reserva Rio de la Plata The national flower of Argentina, Ceibo Cooling off in the Rio de la Plata A section of forest The nearby downtown A sandwich cart with political message
Both of these areas are unique and worth a visit should you ever be nearby.

Love the spanish mossy looking stuff in Pinckney NWR. Nice photos. I like the perspective of the island in the sand
The Argentinian state flower is beautiful!

Thanks Mike,
I checked out Tigre on previous trips and it is indeed a fine place for birding and exploring on its many islands.

The Ceibo is also the national flower of neighboring Uruguay.
