Thanks much for the info, Rich. Bariloche was described as pretty "resorty", (like Aspen) so I'm glad to know there's some cool places to escape to. Laguna Toncek is on my list now, so thanks. Hey any info about bugs? Sounds like a dumb question, but I am kind of allergic to bites. No malaria down there, I know, but were there mozzies? Anything nastier than mozzies like scorpions? We'll be there fall-ish time so I'm hoping that we miss bugs!

For anyone who hikes in Patagonia, the horseflies (tabanos) are prevalent from Dec thru Feb. No squeeters though. It sounds like you'll miss them if you come in the fall. Yellow Jackets have invaded the area, but I only saw a few of them.

Rich probably has more current info on San Martin de Los Andes or Esquel as alternate less touristy areas.
