I rode my motorcycle out to the Perry Creek trail Saturday afternoon arriving around dusk. Two tired hikers told me they had just done Stillaguamish Peak. Then one of them said "Hey, are you Gimpilator"? For a second I was shocked that someone recognized me. Then the next thing he said was definitely not healthy for my ego "you're a legend". I guessed correctly that this guy knew me from summitpost.com where I have posted the majority of my photos.
I hiked two miles in the dark and pitched my tent on a snow bank near Perry Creek Falls. I set my mental alarm clock for 4 AM. I woke up only a few minutes late and was moving by 5AM. The snow under the trees was hard and icy in spots. After awhile it was necessary for crampons. The route was difficult to follow in the dark and I used my GPS frequently for navigation.
Around dawn I reached the top of Stillaguamish Ridge. I was happy to catch views of several of my favorite Mountain Loop Highway peaks. From the meadows I traversed over to the east face of Mount Forgotten. The snow was a little softer here but not enough to warrant snowshoes, which was lucky because I didn't bring any. From the high plateau I could see the two gully options. The one on the left is supposed to be the safer option in the summer because the one on the right in steeper and notorious for loose scree. Seeing as how they were both filled with snow, I chose the more direct right side gully. By 9AM I was on the summit.

Beautiful pictures! They are a bit too big for me to really enjoy viewing, though. What a great idea to get up there for the early morning light. Did you sign the register?

Try this link for an easier way to view the pictures. As far as the register goes, I didn't know there was one. It must have been barried in the snow.

Gorgeous pictures! It's even more beautiful in the winter than in the summer based on your photos. It's a lovely summer day hike also.

I wouldn't do that solo. Let me rephrase that. My wife wouldn't want me to do that solo. I'm impressed you did it solo.

If you open a pic and right-click on it, one of the options should be "View Image". Choose this, and the pic should re-size to fit the window. At least it does in Firefox, not sure about IE.

I don't know how many times I've attempted this mountain in winter and failed so miserably... What do the meadows look like?

It's funny you mention that because this was actually my third attempt. The first time was years ago in late summer and I made it all the way to the gullies but they were still filled in with icy snow and I hadn't brought an axe. The second time was in early Spring and because of overconfidence in my memory of the route, I didn't bring a map so I failed to reach the ridge top. The meadows were lovely, just snowy flat terraces surrounded by clear views of neighboring peaks. THANK YOU to everyone else who has posted nice comments.
