Well, the way I see it is, the hikers get the hills all spring and summer and fall now the winter as well? I don’t have a snowmobile nor have I ever used one, but Im not going to complain, with all the nice winter hikes you wont see me in there way. Yes I said in there way, If I see a snowmobile going up some hiking trail I will be the first to give them hell, until then I say have fun boys.

Chris, we had no problems with the snowmobiles. We expected to see many. It was a fluke we chose the one weekend and place where the club has it's annual get together. The snowmobilers we talked with in the parking lot and at the lookout were nice folks. No problems existed.

Well I just thought the original post was as issue with snowmobiles but I may have been wrong, it’s just that I have seen a few people complain about hobbies they have no interest in, and people somtimes are intolerant of the other guys interest, and activities. More and more areas keep getting closed off and it seems that every outdoor hobby keeps overlapping with each other, and something has to give. Its frustrating to see that happen, when I was a kid we were in the hills all the time and we hardly ever saw any people, and now with almost every forest service road gated, removed or blocked or washed out, its as if we are all in the same place at the same time. I can name dozens of roads and areas now closed or gated, if opened it would take the pressure off these congested areas.

Obviously the issue should be - were the snowmobiles leashed or unleashed?

hmmm.gif I think they were rogues that were on their own!!! winksmile.gif To Chris_NWUE - you misunderstood the original post. We found the snowmobilers to be quite compatible and reasonable!!! While we may not have liked the noise - they certainly were quite well-mannered and very respectful of our co-existence. It was our choice to hike in this area, knowing that they were there. (Don't want this thread going off on some tangent it shouldn't - leave it as a beautiful day to be out enjoying Mt. Baker, whatever your chosen method of mobility! agree.gif )

the snowmobile 'rally' was an unexpected addition to our outing, that's for sure. Not exactly a wilderness experience this time. Isabel would have done her best to herd them all- if only I'd let her try!

Next time I go for Baker's summit, it will be hard not to recall the snowcycles buzzing up & down the glacier. I thought winter ascents were supposed to be more challenging & noteworthy! confused.gif

I have ridden on snowmobiles before. Sure they are loud and stenchy (you can of course not ride one that is 2 cyl lawnmower.....they just cost more to get more environ friendly ones) This winter I seriously considered riding one again just so I could get out. Ended up not panning out due to the snow but oh well. They are actually quite fun to ride. The way I look at it is this: if you know the route is snowmobile friendly then don't be surprised to see them. It is common down at Helens to see them. I guess I see it like horses and motorbikes on multi-use trails.

we did know the area was used by snowmobiles- we just weren't prepared for the sheer number of them on this particular day. As Jim K said- it was a fluke we happened on their annual get-together. All we encountered were pleasant folk, and had their BBQ in the meadows still been in full swing when we got down, we may well have crashed it!

All was good - heck, the "boys" even invited us to join them for a beer at the Lyman Tav - now, that's peaceful coexistance!!! agree.gif winksmile.gif
