The link doesn't reveal that the article was given top billing as the lead-off for the publication. To be honest, having climbed with Tom, gravity never had a chance against him.

I would have climbed this one a long time ago... however, I make it a point to not climb anything that has the word "Assassin" in it.

I remember reading in some of your older TR's of rarely climbed peaks, that you've found and signed some original restisters left by the first ascent parties. Did you happen to leave a register behind on Assassin? Or was there no place to leave one because of snow and ice cover. Maybe it didn't even cross your mind, Just curious and congrats on being featured in the arcticle

r2h - We knew going into the climb that it would be all snow on the summit, so leaving a register there would have been impractical.
On a side note, a team of skiers was attempting a new line on Colfax Peak at the same time we were on the summit of Assassin Spire. Richard Conner, one of the skiers, shot the following photos of us...

question: what defines a winter ascent?

In New Hampshire the "rules" are that you must leave the trailhead after winter solstice (day, hour, and minute), and return to your final trailhead before the vernal equinox (day, hour, and minute). The reason they've specified it so much is because it's a common game there to try to hike the 48 4000' summits in winter (over several winters, or in a single season).
I think most people hike for their own satisfaction, trying to achieve their own goals... so people can just come up with whatever definition suits them.
I don't know what governing body claims to be an authority on first ascents and first winter ascents, but if you want to get some body to recognize your achievement, contact them first to find out? In New Hampshire, there is a generally recognized "club" for people doing these winter ascents, and they've established the rules ( http://www.amc4000footer.org/faq.htm#winter ) ... people are free to hike towards that goal or do their own thing.

Yana, you may be right. I think you should head up there and get to the bottom of this!
@Iron.. a Winter ascent (to me) is defined as any ascent between December 21st and March 21st. You can have a winter conditions ascent as well which could potentially have more winter-like conditions than winter (like Rainier in November for example).
