The best beer I ever had may have been a Rainier I spotted at the bottom of the creek between Laura and Lillian lakes on Rampart Ridge. up.gif

I'm a Porter fanatic, so usually Deschutes Black Butte Porter for me. I actually once drank one on the summit of the Black Butte itself (next to one of the fire lookouts up there). Recently I discovered Maui Brewing Company's Coconut Porter (which comes in a can) and is really handy for hiking. I have a soft lunch sized cooler pouch that I use and insert a couple of those flexible blue-ice packets that are usually used for medical purposes. This works great for exercise hikes up Tiger Mountain as a summit reward (Ice Cold)! Currently I'm exploring different Barley Wines which are also amazing (I just love this craft brewing craze that's going on, so many to choose from)! Oh, and almost forgot...Last summer on a trip up the PCT to Ridge and Gravel Lakes, we started in the afternoon and reached the lakes at dusk. Heading over to camp we had to pass through a guys camp where he was with a couple of his kids. The guy handed me an ice cold Mirror Pond to my amazement! He said he had too many and didn't want get too tipsy with his kids around. I was more than happy to help him out and thanked him profusely. What a wonderful way to roll into camp on a summer evening! One of my hiking buddy's started a thing...we each choose a beer for our day-hikes and then share in cups at the summit and review each others choice. Great fun!

"And I know it seems easy," said Piglet to himself, "but it isn't everyone who could do it."

I haven't read all five pages, but I'd say my favorite is whatever my partner carried. I wouldn't normally touch a PBR with a ten foot pole, but I happily drank half of one at Camp Muir last weekend.

If not now, when?

Brews Almighty in Everett has just purchased a canning system that will allow them to can any of the beer they have on tap. Won't arrive for a few weeks but when it does, it opens up options to take an "on tap" beer with you on your hike.

Lots of breweries are getting into the canning act these days, and it's great!

If you ever get to Spokane, check out the Manito taphouse, voted the best tap room in Wa state! http://www.khq.com/story/34629008/spokanes-manito-tap-house-named-best-beer-bar-in-washington Great food too, one of the owners is a gourmet chef...cool people there too at the bar. it's located about 3 miles south of I-90 and sacred heart hospital.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I have a hard enough time keeping hydrated. The last thing I bring into the backcountry is alcohol. LOL. Good on you guys though.

When I pack in alcohol -- it is usually something distilled -- Single malt whisky. However on recent trip to Japan, I found Sake to be enjoyable, more packable than beer and with fewer after effects than beer for me. In Japan most grocery stores have a Sake row with a wide range of choices -- the Sake in paper cartons similar to US milk cartons is easy to pack and inexpensive.

I don't want the additional weight and I'm ashamed of some of you, so called, "backcountry bad-asses" I usually brew my own when I'm out in the backcountry. But if I'm going to a area where I'm pretty certain I can't find the critter for the main ingredient then I will pack some in...
