I had a great time with Janet as we explored an old and a new area. Lots of wildflowers still blooming, especially as we climbed out of the valley. Below are a few of my shots. All 35 photos are here:

Hey, are satin flowers the same as grass widow?  I googled "satin flower" and all I'm getting are insipid wedding floral arrangement websites. rolleyes.gif

Looks like you had lots of flowers to eyeball up there! up.gif

Thanks for the gorgeous pictures and beta on Reecer. We were over at Whisky Dick last week and missed the cactus and the day was too cold for bitterroot. We also went up to the Observatory at Manashtash but nothing like what is blooming on Reecer. Hmm... maybe time for yet another road trip east.

I did not know what exactly is the difference between Satin Flower and Grass widow either. Burke has a good explanation of the difference and pictures for both of the types. They are two varieties of Olsynium douglasii. Olsynium douglasii var douglasii  I typically call grass widow but is also called satin flower. The color is darker purple and the filaments at the base are thinner. The tips of the flowers also look to be more round. Olsynium douglasii var inflatum is lighter in color, the filaments at the base or more 'inflated'. The tips of the petals are also very pointed.  It is only called 'grass widow'.

Cool - I did not know that. I haven't seen the paler one. Something new to look for.
