fade out
Goat Lake hike, mtn loop Highway, WA, 6/19
Well, I can either say that at least we saw half the mountain, or I can say bummer we only saw half the mountain. Lets go with ....It was a very cool half a mountain and worth the hike.
It was my first time for the Goat Lake hike and now I will have to do a rematch when I can see the rest of the mountain.
As always, the northwest never really has a bad photo day, just you sometimes have to work a bit harder to find the photos.
falls just below lake.

Facilities at this trailhead are pretty limited considering how easy access it is, just head out on mountain loop highway until you run out of pavement, go about 3.7 miles further on gravel road that can be navigated by a Corolla, Turn right at the Elliot Creek/Goat lake sign half buried in the bushes and drive .8 mile to the VERY limited trailhead parking for such a popular easy hike, and the fake-you-out outhouse that isn't open yet.

10.9 miles going up the lower trail, going partway round the lake and returning the longer, and painfully boring upper trail. (albeit the upper trail has a couple of views, when weather cooperates.
Just cruising along Elliot creek on the lower trail is worth the price of admission.

Then after the two trails converge together again, you run into some wonderfully big trees.

And you can always poke around looking for old mines and old road log covered road beds.

The waterfall at the outlet of the lake is pretty spectacular in itself, although clear views of it are just about impossible.

We did not get to see the spectacular snow capped peaks around the lake, but even so, there was much misty atmosphere to soak in and enjoy. And soak was the key word with all the wet brush on the lake edge trail.

After absorbing all the scenic wonder, and a few gallons of water into our clothes from the bushes (Since it wasn't raining, we waited too long before considering rain gear and by then it was too late), we then hoofed it back down the upper trail which is more of a graded road bed, and not nearly as interesting as the shorter lower trail, but it did have its moments.

all in all, a very pleasant day for 60% chance of rain. Summer would be nice too though.

That was the intent. Should have scouted the area better the previous week. There's a few slabby boulders to pitch a freestanding tent or bivy on, but i had a hammock. From shore it looks like there's tons of trees to hang on. On closer inspection......all of the trees large enough to hammock on, are so ice and avi damaged it's not worth the risk. It's the first time i have not been able to find a spot.
