Just a quick TR on Silver Start Mountain. Went there yesterday (6/12/10) and the trails were all in good shape. I started from the FR 4109 TH. Snow patches at the 4000 ft level. I went looking for wild flowers which is what the trail is famous for but it's still early, maybe a couple of more weeks. What I did find very interesting was I had a front role seat at viewing four volcanoes, Mt St Helen's, Mt Adams, Mt Rainier and Mt Hood. What a view it was smile.gif . Imagine all four going off at the same time, what a show it would be. If you go there take the L-1100 forest Service road off Dole Valley road (see link above), you will avoid many of the sink hole pot holes, ruts, rocks, and mud pits FS Road 41 has. You still will have a mile or so of rough 4109 road to deal with. I did find a couple of cars that make it up the 4109 road. L-1100 is poorly mark so keep an eye out for it. It's about three miles from East Fork River road. From L-1100 its about six miles to the junction of 4109 and L-1100. Takes lots of water, it was hot up there and the biting flies were out. My dog had a hard time with the heat (he wears 2 fur coats) so I had dose him down with water a couple of times until we hit the snow. On the way down a couple of times I wish I had my fleece vest when it began to cool off and the cool breeze started flowing. It's a popular trail with the locals and the small parking lot was full so try to get there early.

Getting to *that* (north) TH is the bad part. If you go to the south ("Grouse Vista") TH, the road is in very good shape.

60 pounds lighter but not 60 points brighter.

As I mentioned before don't forget the bug juice. They got me good frown.gif , much worst than what I thought rant.gif . Those sneaky little flies. I am hoping to back the first week in July, wild flowers should be blooming by then, and maybe the sun too up.gif
