We were looking for the sunniest place we could find for a day hike and the weather at Estes Butte did not disappoint.
The trailhead, located off the pot holed Chiwawa River road, had only one red pick up in it. But horse people access the trail from another nearby horse loading area.
The trail up to the look out seems longer than three miles. It has long traverses between switchbacks (graded for horse users). There are no views until you get to the lookout site. For those more adventurous, the unmaintained trail to the true summit will provide ample views of the Chiwawa Ridge to the west with Garland, Devils' Smoke Stack etc. to the east.
Great views from the L.O. site. Chihuahuas with Chiwawa Ridge.
Parts of the unmaintained trail have slippery gravel on steep side slope while other parts have dense brush, but the trail is easy to follow. The true summit is worthy the effort. According to the Green Trail map, you will drop 400 feet from the lookout site to a low point on the ridge, but our altimeter showed this to be a 650 foot drop leaving about 1300 feet to climb up steep trail to the summit.
Bob enjoying the view. Estes Butte ahead. It was brushy in a few areas. Slippery spot on unmaintained trail. Nice, open ridge. Flowers. Lupe got hot, and took a break in the sling. Unmaintained trail from the lookout to the summit. Clark Mt. surrounded by clouds. A look back at the Estes Butte Lookout site. A peek at Mt. Maude and Seven Fingered Jack. Luis enjoying the view of Chiwawa Ridge.
Distance 10 miles RT
Elevation Gain 4800 feet (with ups and downs on the ridge)
No snow

Funny thing, I had the same feeling when I went up there a couple of weeks ago. As I (thought) I was nearing the top I met two ladies coming down and ask them, "how much further"?. They said, "oh your about half way". I assumed they were having fun with me. Nope!
Nice pics. I should have gone on to the true summit, but was too hungry having forgot my lunch.

Yep, the longest "three" miles we have ever done! You would have needed your lunch for the summit. It took us nearly 1.5 hours to reach it from the lookout.

Where are the poodles?
Seriously (or not) looks like you had a great time in a beautiful place.
Your dogs are so cute! I don't think my cats would take to being carried in a sling like that. Looks like fun.
Thanks for sharing.

Great report. We did this hike about a month ago and were pretty shocked that it took us so long to do the supposed 6 miles round trip. Then I read this in the Day Hiking Central Cascades book...
"Ignore what the old guidebooks, maps and Forest Service literature say about this hike in regard to its distance. It's not 2.6 or 3 miles to the old lookout site, it's more than 4 miles one-way"

That makes more sense. The trail was "re-engineered" in 1995, making it longer and less steep for horses. No wonder it took us nearly 2 hours to get to the lookout!
