Blessed are the weather forecasters. I braved them and had one of my most enjoyable solo climbs. There are excellent route descriptions by Yana and others: yes, the key to a quick climb is identifying the proper gully at the top of Phelps Basin. (Last year I made a routing mistake which led to other routing mistakes and all sorts of trouble so when I finally got to the base of Dumbell I decided to go for Greenwood instead.) Once up the last basin I climbed the well-known chimney to the right to gain the crest; going down I traversed West and chose a crappy gully with some very precarious boulders which gave me some trepidation while I was in the narrows of the gully below them. I made the summit in 5 1/2 hrs from Phelps Cr Th. It's a splendid viewpoint and has one of the best summit bivy sites. tdd

Didn't you say you would never drive that road again?
Beautiful summit!

Nice work. I can't see the dogs -- fix my label. I'm there on "Page 11"!

Label fixed: the dogs are right under (b). Still hard to see, though: 700 ft, and my camera is not that good.
Ah, the road: it takes me half an hour to drive the last 8 miles of it I'd rather drive the first couple of miles of Phelps Cr trail...
Still, Dumbell is a great hiking/camping destination, Phelps basin in particular (Spider Meadow gets crowded), and especially if you want to tap Greenwood (and Genius)
Thanks everybody.

I stole the idea from Franklin. I love browsing through summit registers. Maybe we should start a Summit Register thread--under what? N

Hey, if you keep posting registers like that I might stay home and enjoy the experience right here!
Really, that was a fun TR to read. When I was there (2007) I took Klenke's register comment as a challenge: "Will the N. Ridge go as a route over to Greenwood?" After a couple hours of poking around, we conceded what everyone must already know - that the answer is, "not easily."
6 hrs up? What, do the dogs pull you? You got a wagon or something to ride? How can I get in on that?

It was the best hiking weather (I wilt in the heat), and having screwed up last year I knew exactly where to go this time so I lost no time searching for the best line (which isn't always obvious as you know). But you ARE right: I kept the dogs on leash so they wouldnt' get exhausted chasing marmots and they provide a certain momentum even when they are good.
RichP was interested at one time in exploring a high route from Chiwawa to Dumbell (he knows the area very well) but that may have the same result as your Klenke challenge. Intriguing, though. N

Yeah, awesome write-up on what looks like an interesting hike. May be in that same area on thursday(in part, because of this TR).

Lee Adams, on page 17 of the summit register photos, was the guy who died on Rainier a few weeks ago. He was a great climber and a great person.
