Fellow stalwart NW Hiker/WTA volunteer Mace and myself took a leisurely dayhike up the Long Ridge trail on Sunday. 27 miles and 12 hours later we arrived at the trailhead realizing there is still a very significant amount of snow left in the high country. The trail is in fine shape with the exception of about a dozen down trees that can be easily negotiated by hikers but would pose a problem for stock. The gradual nature of this trail makes the fact that you are gaining almost 5000' in elevation very imperceptible. There are several opportunities for drinking water from about 4000' on as snow melt has created a few places to grab a drink.

Patchy snow starts around the 4500' - 4800' range with continuous snow in Dodger Basin.

The ridge leading up to Dodger point is partially snow covered as the trail makes an appearance here and there. The snow around the lookout is still fairly deep and will take some time to melt out.

Beautiful day for views.

All in all a great day in the mountains.

Nice report and photos, Scott. I did that as a day hike about 4 years ago, and I certainly knew I'd had a day of it by the time I got back to Whiskey Bend. That was also the day hike that convinced me to start using liner socks to avoid blisters. Thanks for letting us know what it's like up there now.

That's a hefty dayhike, well done. Makes me think that with a few more hours you may have been able to make a loop of it by continuing past Dodger point, heading down past Semple plateau, cross the Elwha, and head back along the main trail.

I would not want to try and ford the Elwha at Remann's cabin right now. Lots of snow still left in the high country and a real warm day make for one boiling river right now.

My feet hurt just thinking of such a long day! Well done.
