They do that in The Enchantments. If you can't figure out your abilities in mileage and gain, it's not their problem. Plus, they've probably heard that one a time or two, "Why can't I camp here! I like it heeerrreee I can't make it any further! would you rather me stumble around in the dark?" " Well, why didn't you say so! I understand! You're tired. You go ahead and make camp in the Lost World Plateau with no permit, no problem."
But I would think NCNP in that area would be a bit more lenient - it's not like folks are clamouring and clawing their way around there.
Blake not able to make it? Hard to fathom that. PiB & I once dropped him off at the Bridge Cr trailhead on Hwy 20 with nothing but the clothes on his back & butt, a bottle of water, and tenny-runners - he was going to a wedding in Stehekin that afternoon.

trout, trout, pretty little trout, jump right in and splash about.

I may not have anyone rocking my world right now but, I don't have anyone messing it up either.

There are a number of variables that can affect a trip.
The Mountaineers may not teach that part though.
Yeah, I get the variables
...point being that if they gave in for one person with that excuse, hundreds would suddenly claim the same "problem." Not that Blake's issue wasn't legit; I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
I have no idea what the Mountaineers teach regarding trips.

Oh, I thought you were all dating a Mountaineer guy and was into all that Mountie stuff now. Don't mind me, I do not keep up on things so good.
I am not advocating abusing the system. However, I don't think penalizing people for legitimately falling short of their attempted milestone for the day is appropriate.

I suspect Blake made up that excuse. That said, I'm sure it's not always the case. That's just part of discretion the ranger would have for interpreting the rules.
He told me himself that he didn't have a permit for that trip, and that a lot of the locals frown on the whole program. *shrug*
That said, I think they managed to get that ranger fired after that season. It was the same one who stopped us and checked our permit when we were there.

OK, gotcha. But we're not dating.* I don't take any Mountaineer classes, but they do have a good Naturalist course.
I don't pay any attention when he starts with the "being prepared" rigamarole. I just roll my eyes. But rolling my eyes looses its affect when I have to borrow his sun screen because I forgot mine, or I need some ibuprophen because I forgot to pack it. Same as when I roll my eyes at JimK when he starts up with his "being prepared" mumbo-jumbo, and then I have to unroll them when he hands me his second sandwich because I forgot mine.
I hate it when I have to eat my rolled eyes.
